Monday night football. Is there anything better? Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were again on top form on Sky Sports as they delivered a superb analysis of the enigmatic talent that is Manchester United's Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman has scored a goal every 110 minutes in the Premier League this season and he has done his chances of a massive new contract no harm at all with a return of four goals in his last three Premier League games. His statistics compare remarkably well with the very best in England.
Martial's 17 goals and nine assists since August 2016 are actually up there with the very best in the division when considering the time spent on the pitch as equivalent to a full Premier League season. As you can see from the video further down below.
However, the work-rate of the 22-year-old is questionable in the extreme. Martial's average distance covered per 90 minutes is 9.1km, which is a full kilometre less than the likes of Mo Salah, Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and the like.
Speaking ahead of the live Monday night match involving Tottenham and Manchester City, Carragher said:
When Martial doesn't score, what is he actually bringing to the game?
When I've watched Martial the last few weeks he has been nine-out-of-ten or ten-out-of-ten. But when he doesn't score he's four-out-of-ten.
Neville added:
I looked at his [Martial's] physical stats compared to those players there and I got the shock of my life...
Martial was well down on his physical stuff.
The struggle for Martial is to produce the goods on a consistent basis as he looks to fulfil the potential that saw many hailing him as 'the next big thing' when United paid Monaco £36m for his services three years ago.
