The Macau Grand Prix in China was marred by a horrendous crash involving 17-year-old Sophia Floersch. The German’s lost control flying into a corner and hit a fence causing concern for everyone watching on.
The young driver remarkably survived the crash however she will need surgery after suffering from a spinal fracture. She tweeted on social media: “Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into Surgery tomorow morning. Thanks to the @fia and @hwaag_official @MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me. Thanks to everybody for the Supporting messages. Update soon.”
A member of her team, Van Amersfoort, confirmed she was in a stable condition following the crash. Fellow driver Sho Tsuboi, who Florsch hit, has also been taken to hospital with severe back pain.
The race organisers also sadly report that two photographers and a marshal are also in hospital, with injuries. The race was red flagged immediately after the incident but did restart an hour later, however, there was a muted atmosphere with the viewers scarred by the horrible crash they had just witnessed.
The legendary Jenson Button tweeted his concerns on Twitter: “Sorry to hear that @SophiaFloersch has a spinal fracture but looking at the horrific accident she had today in Macau it could have been so much worse. #getwellsoonSophia”
We would like to join the former F1 world champions in wishing Sophia the best of luck with her surgery and we hope she recovers fully from what was an awful crash.
This is her crash from the tribune: literally a bullet fired into tribune.
