Matt Fitzpatrick defends his US Open title at the Los Angeles Country Club this week (June 15-18), and while the Englishman certainly can’t be ruled out of retaining it, there’s a whole host of golfing superstars alongside him vying to win the summer’s third major title.
These are the current frontrunners to be crowned champion in the City of Angels according to Betfred.
2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler heads to California as the favourite for US Open glory, and for good reason. The world number one was tied second in Brookline last year alongside fellow American Will Zalatoris and behind winner Matt Fitzpatrick. Scheffler’s most recent win came in March in golf’s “fifth major”, the Players Championship. The 26-year-old has been incredibly consistent this season, making 15 cuts from 15 events.
Jon Rahm became the first Spanish golfer to win the US Open in 2021 and having finished a disappointing 12th in last year’s edition, he’ll be eager to be in contention once again. The 28-year-old won the Masters in April but has been inconsistent since, finishing T-15 in the RBC Heritage, second at the Mexican Open, T-50 at the PGA Championship and T-15 at the Memorial Tournament at the beginning of the month.
Current PGA Championship Brooks Koepka secured his fifth career major in style at the Oak Hill Country Club in May, showing that his less regular LIV Golf schedule hasn’t been a hindrance on his ability to compete. He already has two wins at the US Open and could be decent value to make it a hat-trick.
Could Rory McIlroy’s long wait for a fifth major finally come to an end this month? The Northern Irishman’s last big win came all the way back in 2014 at the PGA Championship, but he has come close on a number of occasions and is a perennial threat. Winner of this tournament in 2011, the 34-year-old has finished T-9 or higher in his last four appearances at the US Open.
World number four Patrick Cantlay hasn’t won a major yet and is arguably the best golfer around not to do so - is this where the Californian finally arrives on the big stage? Being from Los Angeles, he’ll know the course well and will have something of a home advantage, but with just four top ten finishes in majors career, including a T-9 at the PGA Championship, the 31-year-old needs to find some consistency.
