Ernie Els is one of the greats of the modern game and is a multiple Major Championship winner. Els is one of the greatest South African players of all time aside and is a former world number one, who has won a plethora of notable tournaments throughout his illustrious career.
Els turned professional back in 1989 and just five years later he was making a massive name for himself in the US. He won the US Open on just his second appearance at the event which was a remarkable achievement for such a young man. The same year he was voted PGA tour rookie of the year to really announce himself as one of the best talents in the game. He returned to the US Open in 1997 to claim his second win at the event as he defeated Colin Montgomerie by just the one shot.
The South African had the honour of forming part of the famed Big Five of golf during the early part of the century alongside Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and compatriot Retief Goosen. It was a golden age of the game and Els was a key part of the success as he picked up his first Open Championship win at Muirfield in 2002. He won the Claret Jug after a four-way play-off after previously finishing in the top five on a number of occasions.
Els went through something of a slump during the later part of the 2000's but he bounced back in stunning style in 2012. The Big Easy picked up his second Claret Jug at Royal Lytham following the infamous Adam Scott meltdown to add a fourth Major title to his CV. That success saw Els rocket back up the world rankings and where he belongs with the elite of the world game.
