England Coach Jones Says Solomona Has The X-Factor

England Coach Jones Says Solomona Has The X-Factor

At a press conference on Thursday morning to announce his England squad to tour Argentina this summer, Eddie Jones had a glint in his eye.

When facing the media, he usually does.

As the conversation turned to the inclusion of rugby league convert Denny Solomona, the Red Rose boss was grinning from ear to ear.

"There's something about him, he finds the line and you like wingers who find the line," said Jones of the Sale Sharks wideman.

"He has that ability when he gets the ball to score a try. I watched him play against Gloucester at the weekend. He's still got a lot of work to do on his game in terms of position, but they are areas that I think we can work on.

"I think he's got that X-factor, whatever you want to call it. He finds the line. He's got a Test coming up on June 10 and he can be a regular after that."

The former Samoa rugby league international, who qualifies for England on residency grounds, is one of 15 uncapped players in a 31-man squad for this summer’s two-Test series.

His England selection comes just weeks before World Rugby, rugby union's global governing body, is set to extend the time players need to qualify for a country on residency grounds from three years to five. There is certainly no denying Solomona's talent, with the Auckland-born player having scored 10 tries in 13 appearances for Sale since joining in December.

Solomona’s inclusion in the England squad completes a remarkable journey for a player who set a Super League record for Castleford last season by scoring 42 tries, many of them acrobatic efforts which underlined his athleticism and dexterity.

He made an inauspicious debut for Sale during a European Champions Cup defeat at home to Saracens in December, playing 80 minutes on the right wing.

The 23-year-old had a couple of decent opportunities either side of half-time but spurned them. Sale’s director of rugby Diamond said afterwards: “Denny probably could have taken one or two of those opportunities, but these things happen and I’m sure he will get many more.”

Indeed, his finishing prowess did not take long to show itself and he scored on his Premiership debut in a defeat to Northampton.

The tries have continued to flow for Solomona and he quickly made himself at home in the North West of England.

That he has taken to the 15-man code so seamlessly should come as no real surprise.

Solomona played union for St Peter’s College in his native Auckland before making his name with Melbourne Storm’s under-20s side and then at London Broncos.

His final appearance for Castleford came on September 25 last year before Sale handed him a three-year deal.

That he had two years remaining on his contract with Castleford before “retiring” from league to take up his opportunity at Sale means it has now become a legal battle.

A storm is brewing but the Sharks have certainly had no qualms about throwing Solomona in at the deep end.

Neither, it seems, will Eddie Jones.
