Focused England Have Eyes On Six Nations Championship Grand Slam

It is an intriguing thought.

If England can maintain the feelgood factor engendered from last year’s autumn internationals, could they land a third successive Six Nations title?

Under Eddie Jones, the Red Rose have played 23 Tests and won 22 of them, losing just once.

That argues a degree of consistency but, with the 2019 World Cup in Japan slowly coming into focus, it is time for England to step up even further and show just how good they can be.

Beating the All Blacks remains the real acid test but a hat-trick of Six Nations successes, a feat that has not been achieved before, would do just nicely this spring.

England’s training leading into Sunday’s opener against Italy is said to have been intense, both during their time in Portugal last week and more recently at their Pennyhill Park base in Bagshot.

Head coach Jones said: “Test match rugby never changes, it doesn’t matter who you are playing and where you are playing them.

“You’ve got to get your set piece right, you’ve got to be strong defensively and you’ve got to play with aggression and energy.”

Such is the strength and depth of England’s squad, Jones has had a number of selection dilemmas to ponder ahead of the trip to Rome.

He has named Ben Te’o at outside centre, Courtney Lawes at flanker and Exeter Chiefs forward Sam Simmonds will start at No 8.

Te'o will partner Owen Farrell in the midfield, with Ben Youngs and George Ford at half-back and Jonny May, Anthony Watson and Mike Brown in the back three.

“We’ve got a fantastic squad that have all prepared really well,” said Jones.

“We had a terrific week in Portugal and guys competing for spots, so it’s been difficult.

“The great thing about our team is that no-one is a certainty. Some players have got more credit than others.

“We’ve decided to give Ben Te’o a run at 13, but JJ (Jonathan Joseph) is unlucky not to start but will play a significant role as a finisher.”

Simmonds will start his first Six Nations match for England and Jones says he is impressed by the Exeter man, who will win his fourth cap.

Jones added: “He’s a good young kid, he does the simple things well, he runs hard, tackles hard, works hard.

“He is a humble boy, he’s really fitted into the team well and his enthusiasm for ball carrying is going to be important on Sunday.”

Maro Itoje will partner Joe Launchbury in the second row while England will aim to share the ball-carrying responsibilities in the absence of the injured Billy Vunipola and Nathan Hughes.

“It’s about spreading the workload,” he said.

“We don’t want to rely on one dominant ball carrier because if you rely on one then the opposition find a way to stop that ball carrier and you’re stopped going forward.”

England scrum-half Danny Care, who will start on the bench in Rome and has 76 caps to his name, summed up England’s relentless desire for more success.

The Harlequins playmaker said: “We want to win all five games.

“We know how hard it is going to be, but we are confident that if we get our stuff right starting with Italy on Sunday that we can do it.

“We want to be ruthless, relentless and chase down every team and get as many wins as we can.”
